Stop Putting Up With Low Back Pain
You don’t have to live with low back pain that stops you from doing what you love in comfort. If you’re experiencing back pain, you’re not alone—85% of people deal with back pain that’s bad enough to see a doctor.
Your chiropractor can assess the cause of your low back pain and create a comprehensive custom wellness plan to bring you relief and help prevent your pain from returning.
Causes of Lower Back Pain
Your lower back, the lumbar region of your spine, provides essential support to your upper body. It’s made up of 5 vertebrae that are cushioned by gel-like disks and supported by a complex array of ligaments, muscles, and tendons.
When there’s a disruption to this region due to an injury, a nerve or spinal cord problem, pregnancy, or other issues, your back will let you know.
Most low back pain is caused by an injury such as a strain or sprain from a sudden movement or lifting something too heavy with improper form. Or, it might be caused by sciatica or a herniated disk. Sometimes, back pain just seems to crop up out of nowhere, a seemingly inevitable part of aging.
How Can a Chiropractor Help My Lower Back Pain?
Our goal at your first appointment is to learn what you’re going through and whether we can help relieve your back pain. In your initial consultation, your chiropractor will discuss your symptoms and talk about your goals for treatment.
Next, your doctor will perform a chiropractic examination, testing your reflexes, your ability to turn and bend, and other standard neurological, orthopedic, postural, and physical examinations. That said, we will not do anything during your assessment without your consent.
Sometimes, we’ll take X-rays as part of our full evaluation, so we can rule out more serious conditions and create an effective treatment plan for you.
Sharing Our Recommendations
During your appointment, your chiropractor will give you a report of findings to answer 3 key questions:
- Can you help me?
- What do you recommend that I do to get better?
- How much is it going to cost?
If we believe we can help, we’ll explain our recommended treatment plan. If you have a condition that requires care from other providers, the doctor will let you know.
Treatment at the First Appointment
Patients will generally be provided with their first treatment at the end of the appointment. This may include spinal adjustments (including spinal decompression), physiotherapy treatments, and/or soft tissue therapies.
Treatment is interactive, so you can always express any concerns you have about the style of adjustment or ask questions about the procedure.
Ongoing Care & Wellness Program
Finally, we’ll provide you with a wellness program to follow at home that may include stretches, exercises, the application of heat or ice, advice on developing and maintaining a healthy posture, and changes to your lifestyle that can all support your recovery from back pain.
Chiropractic works best as a phased approach, beginning by addressing pain, progressing to corrective care, and finally becoming about maintaining wellness through a series of appointments. Learn more about what to expect from chiropractic care.
Preventing Lower Back Pain
The good news is that there are some things you can do to decrease your risk of future lower back pain. For example:
- Avoid lifting objects that are too heavy, using repetitive motions, or twisting while you lift
- If you must lift heavy objects, use good form, including keeping the object close to your body, using your knees to lift, and keeping your core engaged
- Get regular exercise that includes your abdominal core and low back and incorporates strength training
- Eat a nutritious diet that supports healthy bones
- If you work at a desk, get up throughout the day, change your position, and use a footrest and lumbar pillow
